Meet the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Akwa Ibom State University

Prof. David Eka hails from Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. He obtained his first degree in English from Obafemi Awolowo University, formerly University of Ife, in 1974. He thereafter proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University and on completion in 1979, he was awarded a Master’s degree in English. Not satisfied, he enrolled in the same institution for a Doctorate degree program and successfully completed same in 1985. 

Prof. David Eka’s core areas of specialization and research interest include: the Phonology of English, Sociolinguistics, General Phonetics, Applied Linguistics and Use of English/Language Planning.


Prof. Eka has at various times worked as a Lecturer, a Senior Lecturer, Head of Department both at the Polytechnic Calabar and the University of Uyo. He once served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) in the University of Uyo.

David Eka is an active member of Professional bodies such as the Linguistics Association of Nigeria, Literary Society of Nigeria, Reading Association of Nigeria and the Nigeria English Studies Association. He has served as an Oral English Chief Examiner and as an External Examiner at University of Calabar, University of Port Harcourt, University of Jos and Imo State University. He once served as the Resource Person for the National Teachers Institute (Kaduna), University of the Gambia as well the International Baccalaureate Organization, Cradiff, Great Britain.


Prof. David has authored several Book as well as Journals. He is presently the Chief Editor and Chairman, Journal of Humanities Editorial Board. He is happily married and his marriage is blessed with children.

Under Prof. David Eka’s faculty in Akwa Ibom State University, the following first degree Arts courses are offered:

- B.A English
- B.A History and International Studies           
- B.A Theatre Arts
- B.A Philosophy
- B.A Religious and Cultural Studies
