MD of Port Harcourt Refining Company Pledges Support to AKSU

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited (PHRC), Engr. Abba Bukar, has promised to support students of the Chemical and Petrochemical Engineering Department of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) to acquire skills and knowledge that will enhance practicability of their course.

He made the pledge when students of the institution were on an excursion visit to the refinery on Tuesday, the 11th of June 2019.

Bukar, urged the students to work hard and prime themselves for takeover of the Oil and Gas Industry, on completion of their studies.

He appreciated the University management for facilitating the visit, stating that it will help bridge the long gap between theory and practice because the student now have the rare opportunity to see about 90% of the PHRC operations.

Welcoming the students earlier, Mrs. Terila and Mr. Felix Ejuvweke, who are with the Production and Distillation (PAD) department of Port Harcourt Refinery, took turns to address them on the history of the Company, her refining processes and the various unit operations that are involved.




Engr Uzubu, the Chief Operator of PHRC Area 3 (Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit of the Refinery) also spoke extensively and gave insight on the process of refining crude oil.

The students were later taken round for a tour of facilities. Areas visited were: Distillation Column; Desalting unit; Heat Exchangers; Control Room; Water Treatment Plant; Fractionating Column; Spherical/Cylindrical tanks (for storage of crude oil; intermediate and finish products); Fire-Fighting equipment; Gas and Steam turbines (for electricity generation); Pipelines; Pumps; Valves and Heaters. 

In his remarks, the Head of the Chemical and Petrochemical Engineering Department, Dr. Rasheed Babalola, thanked the NNPC management for the opportunity granted the students and further made a passionate appeal on behalf of students, who may desire to apply to the company for their Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) in the future.



The Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Akwa Ibom State University, Prof. Aniedi Ette in his vote of thanks praised the management of the refinery for their magnanimity in granting the team the opportunity for the technical visit.  He noted that the students have been greatly inspired to succeed.

The team from AKSU was made up of 100 to 500 level students of the Chemical and Petrochemical Engineering and was led by the Dean of Engineering faculty.

Others in the entourage were lecturers from the department: Engr. Ubong Ekanem; Engr Ekemini E.; Mr Emmenka Blessed; Mr Umo Anniediong and Mr Imoh Usen.

The Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited is in business to optimally process hydrocarbon into petroleum products for the benefit of all stakeholders. The company’s vision is to be an innovative international hydrocarbon processing company of choice.

PHRC Limited is made up of two refineries. The old refinery commissioned in 1965 with current name plate capacity of 60,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd) and the new refinery commissioned in 1989 with an installed capacity of 150,000 bpsd. This brings the combined crude processing capacity of the Port Harcourt Refinery to 210,000 bpsd. It has five (5) process areas - Areas 1-5. The new refinery is made up of Areas 1-4 while the old refinery is Area 5.

PHRC produces the following products:- Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Kerosene (aviation and domestic), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO - diesel), Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO) and High Pour Fuel Oil (HPFO).

PHRC produces UNLEADED gasoline that meets international standard. The PHRC also has in-house firefighting capabilities.
