The Spanish league title race saw some movement on the table after the 10-man Real Madrid lost 2-0 at home to Real Sociedad on Sunday (06/01/2019). Madrid is now in 5th place behind Alaves, which moved ahead of the 33-time champion on Saturday.

Willian José opened the scoring from the penalty spot. As the game progressed, Lucas Vázquez was yellow-carded and sent off at the 61st minute of play, Rubén Pardo wrapped up the victory for the visitors inside the final 10 minutes.

Madrid appealed for a penalty of their own just after the half-hour mark as Asier Illarramendi and Sergio Ramos tussled for the ball in front of goal, but the referee waved played on. Just before the break Vázquez’s attempted cross struck the outside of the post and Madrid went in trailing at half-time.

Sociedad clung to a 1-0 advantage until the final minutes, when Madrid poured forward and exposed goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to repeated counter attacks. Substitute Ruben Pardo finally capitalized in the 83rd minute by heading in a pass from Willian Jose when he was left alone in the 18 metre box.

Led by the vibrant attacking of 18-year-old Vinicius Junior, Madrid created several scoring chances that it failed to finish off. Madrid's defeat comes days after it was held to a 2-2 draw at Villarreal.
A picture that aptly describes the frustration that was experienced in the course of the game
