Prominent sons and daughters, together with friends and well-wishers of the Oro nation conveyed at the Oro Civic Centre, Oron in Akwa Ibom State on Thursday the 28th of December for the 2018 Conference/Festival of Culture. The event was held under the theme “restructuring Nigeria: towards moving Oro forward – issues and perspectives”.

Declaring the event open, the President General of Oron Union – Chief (Mrs) Janet Asuquo Amba noted that it was the first time the Union was hosting the event in collaboration with the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC). She reminded participants that the conference was aimed basically at promoting cultural ties between the various Clans as well as “provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and also to showcase Oro culture to the world”.

The first of the 3-day event featured sounding of traditional canon, traditional dances, inspection of arts/craft booth, inspection of the traditional cuisine booth, ballad rendition and presentation of Awards to deserving members of the society, who have distinguished themselves in the service of humanity. During the event, there was a colourful display of the rich cultural heritage of the Oron people such as the Ekpo, Ekpe, Abang, Ekong, Edeme Awan Nkugho, Mbaya, Kongoma, Mbok and Afiakegit.



The Vice Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University, Prof Eno Ibanga, was specially recognised for his meritorious service and conferred as “Nsang Oro” (friend of Oro). He was accompanied to the event by his lovely wife, in company of senior staff and students of the University.

The Oro 2018 festival is billed to run from Thursday the 27th to Saturday the 29th of December 2018.

Oron nation is a geopolitical entity located in the lower Niger Delta area and it spreads across 5 Local Government Areas in Akwa Ibom State and Cross River State. These include Oron, Okobo, Mbo, Urue Offiong Oruko, Udung Uko and Bakassi LGAs. Popularly known and addressed as Akpakip Oro, they are comprised of 11 Clans. They are presently the 3rd largest ethnic group in Akwa Ibom State and currently play host to facilities such as the Victor Attah International Airport, Maritime Academy, the popular Methodist Boys High School, among others.

The Oron Union was founded in 1925.
