Nigerian Postal Service partners Akwa Ibom State University.

On Thursday, the 22nd of November 2018, the Vice-Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University in company of Principal staff of the institution, received in audience the Executive members of Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), South-South Zone.

The NIPOST team was led by the South-South Zonal Manger, Mallam Abubakar Usman who informed the management of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) of the giant strides and reforms that the Postal service has undergone in the last few years. According the Mallam Usman, NIPOST has been re-engineered for optimal performance in the provision of courier service, bulk post, haulage service, philatelic service and agency banking among several other services. He singled the University out for praise, noting that AKSU had long embraced the use of postal instruments in carrying out various institutional and financial activities.

In his response, the Vice Chancellor – Prof Eno Ibanga expressed gratitude to the team for the visit. He strongly commended the management of NIPOST for the tenacity in weathering the storm that came over the years, especially with the advent of internet in Nigeria when some people erroneously thought that NIPOST will suddenly became irrelevant. According to Prof. Ibanga, the role of Postal service cannot be relegated in any society that desires to progress in the area of getting/distribution of documents, goods and services from one point to another, noting that there is a limit to what can achieved electronically in the economy and the usefulness of a robust postal service cannot be over-emphasized. He assured NIPOST that AKSU will increase her level of partnership in the coming days and months.

The Vice Chancellor informed NIPOST that the University website for example, will further be used as an avenue to educate staff, students and visitors of the vast array of services that NIPOST offers and how they can effectively key into them. He noted also, that there are still areas that the Postal service needs to improve such as redtapism, delays in mail delivery and general system efficiency.  
Akwa Ibom State University can work more closely with NIPOST in the areas of the provision of Philatelic services (postal monuments that can add to the body of knowledge) in the University Library, the Department of History in particular and the Faculty of Arts as a whole

The highpoint of the visit was the commissioning of a NIPOST Branch Post Office in the main campus of Akwa Ibom State University. The Eket District Postal Manger, Mr Olugu Mba had earlier informed the University that the AKSU Branch Post Office has been granted approval to operate all classes of postal transactions to primarily serve the University community and the geographic location of Ikot Akpaden in general.

Present during the visit was the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), the University Registrar, the University Librarian, the University Bursar and the Head - Directorate of Information/Public relations/Protocol
