The long awaited three (3) day Training/workshop for all Administrative staff members of Akwa Ibom State University got-off to a bright start on Tuesday, the 15th of May 2018. The event has been put together by the Registrar of the university, Mr John E. Udo.

Declaring the occasion open, the Vice Chancellor of the Akwa Ibom State University, Prof. Eno Ibanga charged the participants to make the most of the rare opportunity.  He took time to explain why the management of the University embarked on this maiden exercise in a manner that has never been seen in the history of the institution. He challenged them to take time-off, reflect and count their blessings one-by-one.

Prof. Ibanga traced the history of the university from the days of humble beginnings and pointed out that it has been God all the way. He cautioned staff against taking their job as ‘part-time/casual’ and encouraged them to plough-in the needed energy and concentration into it, in order to make it work. He commended the Akwa Ibom State Government for the huge resources that is being sunk into the university and informed staff of the passion of His Excellency, the Executive Governor, in ensuring that the varsity becomes known as a first-class university in the world.
You should be passionate to work. It is passion that drives the will to work, even in the absence of supervision. Universities are made by people to be what they are. It is the quality of staff in any university that make people talk about the institution.

The Registrar of the institution, in his presentation explored the University management system and submitted that universities are primarily established to carry out the functions of Teaching/learning, Research and Community Service. He dug into the theories of management and narrowed it into the functions of the University Visitor, Chancellor, Pro Chancellor, Governing Council, Vice Chancellor, Senate and other principal staff of the university.  According to Mr. John Udo, "universities everywhere are established, among others, because of their immense potentials to contribute to improvement of the quality of life of the people".

Papers were presented by eminent and versatile personalities in the course of the day one (1) of the Workshop ranging from topics such as report/speech writing techniques, minutes drafting/briefs, financial regulations/practises in the university system and the committee system in the university.

The training exercise was very interactive and staff members had time to bare their minds, ask questions on various issues that bothered them and those concerns were adequately address. The well-attended program continues 10am on Thursday, the 17th of May 2018 and promises to be very rewarding and educative.
