The Dean, Faculty of Education in Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) – Prof. Franca Anijaobi-Idem, worried about the increasing number of students that request for change of course and the number of repeat/carry-over courses, as well as spill-over/probation students, last year challenged the Guidance and Counselling lecturers in the Faculty to come up with innovative ideas on how to help students in the Faculty overcome these problems.

According to the Dean, Counselling has to do with the mental health of individuals and if the minds of the students are heavy or confused, it will affect their academic work and progress. They will need someone to talk-to for guidance and encouragement.

Consequently, last week the 3 Counselling Experts in the Faculty of Education: Dr. Kudirat Sanni, Dr. Jane Peters and Dr. Eme Imah presented a proposal to the Dean. According to them, the proposed counselling unit is different from the University Counselling center. The Faculty of Education Counselling unit is going to be a small facility to cater for students in the Education faculty. The facility will provide a one-on-one counselling for privacy of students, which the usual staff office interaction cannot offer. The faculty seminar room will be used for Group counselling.

The Counsellors will also interact with staff members especially academic staff to facilitate quality teaching and effective documentation of students details and records.

It is hoped that the experience will improve the learning efficiency of students, ensure proper adjustment of students educationally, vocationally, personal-socially, as well as boost the mental health of our staff and students.
