The management of Akwa Ibom State University on Wednesday, the 13th of March 2018 organised her maiden one-day retreat for all Senate members. The event was geared towards refreshing the minds of members on the standards that are expected of them in the discharge of their various duties.

Speaking while declaring the retreat open, the Vice Chancellor of the state owned varsity, Prof Eno J. Ibanga charged members to brace-up to and be ready to confront and solve emerging challenges of a conventional institution in their various units/departments. He took time to remind the participants of the importance of constantly familiarizing themselves with documents such as Students’ handbook, Academic brief, Conditions of Service, the University Law, Standing Order of Senate among others. He urged them to learn to share the knowledge so acquired with other members of staff.

Prof. Ibanga wondered why some in the academic community seem to be lackadaisical towards reading, which is the primary way of acquiring knowledge. The Vice Chancellor urged Senate members to be proactive in the discharge of their duty, cultivate the attitude of team work and take personal charge/responsibility in providing solutions. He expressed hope that at the end of the retreat, members will be better informed and equipped for not just Great but Better service delivery.

One of the high points of the event was the presentation of a paper on 'Academic Leadership' by Prof. Don Baridam, a one-time Vice-Chancellor of University of Port Harcourt and the present Head, Department of Business Administration in Akwa Ibom State University. In his final submission, Prof Baridam posited that the demands on academics are somewhat complex. According to Prof. baridam,
we live in an age and time where the Government expects academic institutions to produce more/better research outputs, Nigerians demands better/employable graduates, Parents expect all-round developments, the society expects furtherance of social causes/equity, the faculty expects a fulfilling career that is at par with the industry and the University management expects growth, efficient operations, brand building and proliferation of courses.

Other resource persons were Prof. Esio Oboho, Mr. John Udo, Mr Peter Effiong, Prof Udo Ibok, Prof. Eno Ottong and Prof. Idongesit Isaac.

The one-day exercise featured a more than one-hour 'Question and Answer' session during which questions were asked, observation raised, contributions made and solutions were proffered. Earlier, Prof. Eno Ibanga had promised that 'Senate Retreat' will henceforth be a regular/annual exercise in Akwa Ibom State University.

Prof. Idongesit Isaac in his vote of thanks, commended the visionary Vice-Chancellor for organizing the event - the very first of its kind in the history of the University.
